Earliest Universe.

This picture was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope last fall. It took the observatory a million seconds of viewing time to photograph this chaos of stars and galaxies, just born at the dawn of the universe. In essence, Hubble is a time machine, able to collect light that started in our direction that long ago.

NASA's Administrator says he will allow Hubble to die in a few years because it will be too risky to send the aging shuttles back to service the telescope again. The world's astronomers and much of the public tell him he is wrong. They say Hubble is too valuable to humankind to allow it to die without a fight. I agree, wholeheartedly.

That telescope has virtually rewritten the world's textbooks.

Bob Button, of Jersey City, NJ sent these:

Bob: Three Polar bears approach the starboard bow of the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Honolulu (SSN 718) while surfaced 280 miles from the North Pole. Sighted by a lookout from the bridge (sail) of the submarine, the bears investigated the boat for almost 2 hours before leaving.

Commanded by Cmdr. Charles Harris, USS Honolulu, while conducting otherwise classified operations in the Arctic, collected scientific data and water samples for U.S. and Canadian Universities as part of an agreement with the Artic Submarine Laboratory (ASL) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). USS Honolulu is the 24th Los Angeles-class submarine, and the first original design in her class to visit the North Pole region.

Honolulu is assigned to Commander Submarine Pacific, Submarine Squadron Three, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

U. S. Navy photos by Chief Yeoman Alphonso Braggs.

Helo Hero.

This was sent by Larry Guss of Kensington, MD. Larry writes: "This one is spectacular. This attached shot was taken by a trooper in Afghanistan. Pilot is Larry Murphy, PA National Guard. Larry is a Keystone Helicopter Corp EMS Pilot employee called to active duty. This is a "unique" landing operation and this particular military operation was to round up suspects."
Editor's note: "Wow."
